July 1...
Deadline to comment on Draft Environmental Impact Statement and Proposed Revised Land and Resource Plan for National Forests in Alabama. Because AFOA has received complaints that National Forest officials have begun requiring expensive Environmental Assessments before private landowners may access their timber blocked behind National Forest land, and because notice of public meetings about the Plan was not received in time to alert AFOA members through our newsletter, we urge you to call Rick Morgan at (334) 832-4470 and request that the comment period be extended for 90 days. We have heard that the permission to access private timberland had been routinely given in the past, but National Forest (U.S. Forest Service) officials now fear environmentalists' lawsuits if they grant the permission without volumes of paperwork to protect their backsides.   Click here for plan information and comment procedures.
